Accidents and Emergencies
It’s been ten years since I last recorded an album of my own songs. Then, we were about to move from Hamburg/Germany to the UK and I felt that some of my German songs might not see the light of day after the move. The result was a hastily recorded CD with the title Noch on Tour (Still on tour).
A few years ago, a number of friends and church members encouraged me to make a new recording. I dragged my feet a little, assembled a possible list of songs, but nothing more happened.
In the summer of 2007 I underwent sinus surgery. What had seemed like a routine procedure was abandoned after a few minutes because of complications, including the danger of serious brain injury. During the dark days of waiting for the CT results I sat down at my piano and recorded a dozen rough demos. I even left a note for Edda on my desk to tell her where she could find those recordings - just in case.
It was the experience of those fragile days that first gave this project the title Accidents and Emergencies. The title stuck, even after I received the ‘all clear’.
The making of this album has been a long and sometimes rocky ride - I couldn’t have done it on my own…

Thanks to…
… all my friends at St James who have encouraged me to embark on this project and have supported me along the way: I’m so grateful to be a part of this church.
Lindsey and David for the use of your fantastic Neumann.
… Tim: You make a truly saxophonous sound.
… Martin and Mark: This has been a marathon, but it’s been fun throughout to work with you.
… Mike: From small beginnings our co-operation has grown so much bigger than we all first anticipated. Thank you for your creativity, experience and the many hours invested in this project.
… Edda: You are God’s greatest gift to me - still baffled why you’d choose to love a heap of quirks such as I’m - I treasure every day of our journey together.
… Jesus Christ, who has called me to be a part of the “new humanity. To suffer, to bleed, to open the heart, to roll up the sleeves, to have hope that God has a plan to put the world back together, and it’s called the church.” (Rob Bell: Jesus wants to save Christians).
Incredibly, you work through weak, stumbling amateurs like me, and some of your deepest work is done in the accidents and emergencies of life…
